Rafael Hulme
Narkii:
Why Would you become an industrial designer? Is it related to your interests in your childhood?
Rafael Hulme:
As a small boy, my father always encouraged me to try and make my own things. At the time I would get mad at him, but now I am thankful. There is a great pleasure in being able to create things from scratch that look and function beautifully. I am very thankful to my father for this. When I turned 14 I got interested in clothing and before long was selling garments and accessories to my friends, and in a small local boutique. This helped to break down that “store-bought” concept, leading me to want to create as many of the things in my life as I could.
Narkii:
From your working experiences, you had touched many fields of works, some of which were unrelated to the design industry, why did you choose that jobs? And which job most impressed you?
Rafael Hulme:
I have a very active mind that is constantly moving. New skills and challenges keep me interested and influence one another in the most interesting ways. My work as a builder has impacted my graphic design work and also helped immensely in my understanding of how objects are assembled, and even improved my drawing skills and 3D modeling too. Similarly my video editing experience impacts on my DJ performances. I am often surprised and thrilled at how this disciplines can influence one another!

You had once done as an animator before, does this job have any effect on your industrial design?
Rafael Hulme:
My work as an animator has richly impacted my design skills. You learn a lot about how an object looks when it is moving in front of you. Most objects are designed to look good from specific angles, the best design is 360 degrees with no side left unconsidered. Also, individual features and how they effect the whole of a design can be better understood when you can move an object around and see how it is revealed in rotation. Additionally, ones ability to pick up and rotate an object in one mind is very valuable to a designer, and the animation work helped with that immensely.

We find that you have rich experiences in the design. What is the key point do you think in the industrial design?
Rafael Hulme:
Industrial design to me is a form of problem solving. Being creative and thorough when considering which specific problems an individual has is key. The more you can get down on the ground and look closely at another human beings experience the better you’ll be at helping them. Great designers are empathetic to the experience of others.
Narkii:
Your design works are mostly coming from life and then serving life, so what is your general design concept or design purpose?
Rafael Hulme:
Ideally design helps not only the task at hand, but serves some greater bigger need too. With Haephestus, the portable steam turbine electricity generator, the needs of a young man are met, but the project has further benefits. One day it’s possible that this thing could be scaled up and brought to the third world where it could provide power to those in real need.

Narkii:
What most challenged you and your team when designing the Haephestus? And how did you finally solve it?
Rafael Hulme:
Our group wasn’t connecting well at the beginning. Ideas weren’t jumping out at us and we couldn’t seem to agree on some things. We decided to go camping as a group at a local state park, and it was that hands-on experience that both generated the ideas and brought the group together. We even ended up having a great time and the resulting enthusiasm is what helped us to put together the entire range of Any Rugged products.
Narkii:
What’s the most important thing you should consider when design the products for dogs or other pets?
Rafael Hulme:
A dog is like a human, they get bored, uncomfortable and angry just as we do. It is important to consider them, not merely our own experience. Sure, the pantsuit looks cute on the dog, but an uncomfortable and nervous dog is not going to do the accomplish the great things that dogs can, like helping you relax or connect with a stranger. So, by considering the dog’s happiness, we are in fact serving our own interests too. We all do our best thinking and work when we are happy, relaxed and feel respected.

Some of your works is the team works. As a designer, you may have unique ideas which is different from others, how did you solve the conflicts in the different way of thinking?
Rafael Hulme:
Being the best designer in a group can sometimes means being the best listener. Hearing the ideas of others and internalizing them very thoroughly while showing that you are listening actively is the best way to let a fetal idea gestate and possibly make some friends in your own mind. After an idea has the freedom to swim around in your brain it will collect others and then you can in turn pass that on to another where the process happens again. Creating a space in which all of these iterations are given space to breathe and live or die on their own merit is what makes for great collaborations.
Narkii:
Which designing work do you think is the most successful or you like best? And what’s the reason?
Rafael Hulme:
Of the works in my portfolio the opiate overdose device Seraph is perhaps the most important. Thousands of people are dying every year and the numbers are going up all the time. This simple and affordable device could change that pretty dramatically. This problem effects us all and I for one would love to see it being used to save lives.
Narkii:
You have mentioned that you love to plan things. Could you please tell us what are your plans for yourself in the future?
Rafael Hulme:
Sure! I am currently looking for the next big chapter in my life! I have interviewed for a very promising position in NYC and I am secretly hoping they will be the one as I continue to search for a position that combines my skills in Construction, Fabrication, Soft goods, Pixels and Ideas. So far It’s been super exciting, and I have been impressed with the range of positions people are suggesting for me and the sheer magnitude of freelance offers, but I am looking for a full time position that will not only utilize my rather unusual skills, but also offer new challenges and people and locations. I am also currently organizing a few summer DJ events and consulting on a few of my classmates projects to keep myself occupied while I manifest this amazing dream job.
